Arsenal's Revered European Comeback: Long Overdue?

New Team, New Expectations, for Arsenal fans, the mere mention of the Champions League & prestigious anthem, riles up memories of glory days gone by. Getting back to Tuesday & Thursday schedules will feel a bit an unfamiliar. But clearly, with reason.  However, the last 6 years have seen Arsenal on the outside looking in, as they battled in Europa League hoping they would win their way into Champions league. It took a lot of careful planning, hard-work, risk and strategy to get back to this place.

But, this season, Arsenal has made a triumphant return to the Champions League, promising new hopes and expectations with a revamped team and a fresh coaching perspective. The last time Arsenal graced the Champions League stage was back in the 2016/17 season where we had Ospina, Mustafi, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Monreal representing the club -  Elneny is the only player in the squad that can share his experience. Since then, fans have been eagerly waiting for this team to make a return to Europe's elite competition. The journey back has been long and challenging, filled with ups and downs. But the 2022/23 season marked the clear comeback, following its remarkable season.

Reconstructed squad, young team, new hopes. One of the most significant changes Arsenal underwent in their quest to rebuild was the overhaul to it’s core - Juvenescence. With a fresh emphasis on youth and potential, the team reconstruction has been achieved and more importantly, culturally integrated with driven lofty goals. These new faces have brought with them, a sense of anticipation and optimism that Arsenal can once again compete with Europe's best. Surely, the expectation is to remain in this competition consistently.

In addition to new attacking talent, Arsenal strengthened their midfield with the Declan Rice partnering with Thomas Partey. Rice's versatility, dominance and ability to break up play have added much-needed depth and physicality to the Gunners' midfield. The backbone of any successful team often lies in its defense, and Arsenal has taken steps to fortify theirs. Ben White has added composure and ball-playing ability to the backline; also Timber albeit lengthy absence, elevates the defensive back position. Saliba's partnership with Gabriel Magalhães has the potential to be one of the most formidable defensive duos in Europe.

Furthermore, the young talent like Fabio Vieira and Emile Smith Rowe has provided the squad with a fresh injection of energy. These academy products have an opportunity to contribute significantly into the first team on the big stage - hence the stakes. The managerial change a key factor in Arsenal's resurgence after going through a couple of build-attempts. Now we know our group (B) competition that includes: Sevilla, PSV & RC Lens. There is so much to analyze between now and when face our first group opponent. Sevilla - Europa league serial champions, PSV - very young and challenging team, Lens - very physical and imposing team. So we definitely have our work cut out for us.

The coach’s relative lack of managerial experience in Champions League campaign could be a double-edge sword. However, Arsenal’s decision to take this gamble has breathed new life into the team, inspiring players to embrace the unknown. Arsenal players are embracing the adventure of Champions League football. Their youthful experience and audacity may well become their greatest asset in moments of adversity.

Arteta at the helm, has instilled a winning mentality and a sense of belief that Arsenal can compete at the highest level; and sustain as a standard. The fans are once again filled with hope, and the Emirates Stadium is buzzing with such anticipation. New Expectations with the return to the Champions League, as well, comes with a new set of expectations. Gone are the days of merely “participating”. The Gunners aim to make a genuine impact in this competition. The fans are hoping for a deep run in the tournament, and with the talent at their disposal and Arteta's tactical prowess, this doesn't seem far-fetched. The Premier League will always be a priority, but the Champions League presents a unique challenge and an opportunity for Arsenal to reestablish themselves as a European powerhouse.

The fans long for those magical nights under the floodlights, with iconic moments that will be etched in the club's history. Arsenal's return to the Champions League is not just a mere comeback; it's a statement of intent. With a new-look squad filled with exciting talent and a charismatic coach at the helm, the Gunners are poised to make waves in European football once again.

The expectations are high, but so is the belief that Arsenal can reclaim their place among the continent's elite. As the Champions League season kicks off, the world is watching, and Arsenal fans are daring to dream once more. While the weight of expectations is undeniable, it also carries the promise of renewal, growth, and the chance to rekindle Arsenal’s European legacy. One thing is for sure, this comeback has been reaffirmed with a stronger bond between the club, fans, supporters and club royalties. And so, the gunners have more license to chase after this ultimate prize.
